The Founder and President - Samuel Z. Koilpillai

Mr. Koilpillai (MsHyg '76, biostatistics) is president of Community Uplift Projects International, which funds the Anantha Ashram Trust, in Hosur, India. He was born and raised in south India where he received his bachelor's degree in business administration at a private college in Pune, India. He taught statistics and mathematics there until he and his wife and his first two (of four) small daughters moved to Washington, D.C. in the late 1950's so that he could pursue graduate studies at the University of Maryland. After moving to the United States, Mr. Koilpillai supported his family as a Tamil language broadcaster for the Voice of America while earning his MBA and an MA in economics at the University of Maryland. Later, as a statistician and health information consultant for the Pan American Health Oranization
for 26 years, he focused on the needs of maternal and child health in underserved and at-risk populations in the Caribbean and Washington, D.C. After retiring, Mr. Koilpillai, chose to return to his native country to begin the Anantha Ashram Projects to serve the poor people in that area. He has admistered the Anantha Ashram Trust for the past 17 years, providing health services such as immunizations, health education programs, and most recently, the Prevention of Blindness program, which provides free eye exams and cataract surgeries.
